Do you have any surplus food to donate or discount?

Calling all food businesses! Do you ever discard still-edible food? There are ways to make sure that that food can be enjoyed by those in need of a good meal.

Some customers may like the idea of an ‘end of day’ bargain. This is where the ‘Too good to go’ app can help. The app signals to customers in your local area who may be looking to try a new eatery while grabbing a bargain. The app can be used by food service businesses but also retail businesses such as grocery stores or bakeries. In these cases, ‘surprise bags’ containing perishable foods delight customers while helping you manage stock.

Perhaps you would prefer to donate surplus food to charity? In these cases, it is best to form an ongoing relationship with a local charity and understand their capacity to accept surplus food for redistribution. For example, some charity volunteers can carry out regular pickups, or even prep meals and food items from excess fresh ingredients to help extend shelf life. Alternatively, perhaps you have a staff member who would be able to drop excess food to a local charity on a regular basis.

The Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CRJO) are assisting charities in 10 local Council areas to find sources of food donations. If you are considering donating food or food items, please reach out to Brook Clinton and we can introduce you to a local charity in your area. Thanks to funding under a NSW Environment Protection Authority Food Rescue Grant, CRJO will also be hosting workshops for existing food donors and charities to find out where these activities need additional support.
